Wildcat girls 2nd, boys 3rd in league meet | Cross country
Eyeing another trip to state, the Oak Harbor girls placed second and the boys third at the Western Conference 3A 10-team cross country meet Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville.
The Wildcat teams hope those spots hold true at the district meet at Lakewood High School Saturday, Nov. 3. The top three squads earn state berths. Both Oak Harbor teams qualified for state each of the past two seasons.
The 10 Wesco schools will be joined by Ferndale at district.
The boys' grip on third is slippery; the Wildcats edged fourth-place Shorewood 81-85. Mountlake Terrace won (70), followed by Glacier Peak (74).
Wildcat coach Eric Peterson said, "With only three teams going to state next week, it makes for an exciting but really tense upcoming race."
The Oak Harbor girls look more secure. Nationally-ranked Glacier Peak won with 24 points, followed by Oak Harbor (79), Stanwood (83) and Shorecrest (126).
John Rodeheffer had the best individual finish for Oak Harbor, placing third out of 93 on the 5K course in 16:19. Shorecrest's Carter Osborne won in 16:05.6.
Trailing Rodeheffer were Clayton Richardson (10th, 16:53), Jason Salas (19th, 17:13), Nathan Wagner (23rd, 17:22.9) and Patrick Mayer (26th, 17:24.3).
Peterson said the "breakout race" for the boys came from Wagner "who made his way through the field to move up from seventh on the team to fourth."
Peterson said the girls "ran really well" and "every one of them stepped up and ran great races."
Christina Wicker placed sixth (19:07.8), Alex Laiblin 10th (19:30.8) and Jonalynn Horn 13th (20:05.4) to lead the way.
Also earning points for Oak Harbor were Rachel Crowther (25th, 21:09.5) and Marisa Sligh (27th, 21:13.6).
Assistant coach Andy Wesley said Oak Harbor "got a great performance from Jonalynn," and added, "it's good to see all the workouts pay off" for the team.
Amy-Eloise Neale of Glacier Peak won the girls race of 76 in 17:00.4 to lead a 1-2-4-8-9 Grizzly finish.
