Spring Sports Preview: Playoffs a possibility for Wildcats

Led by senior second-team all league player Mike Johnston and sophomore honorable mention player Greg Wolfe, the Oak Harbor High School soccer team will try to be a part of the playoff picture this season.

“Our goal this year is to get out the bottom three in the league,” said Steve Barker, who is in his 18th season as head coach.

The Wildcats have several strong returning players including seniors Mark Ogren, Griffin Nielsen and Brandon Dagle, along with junior David Moore.

Also returning to the team are sophomores Golf Brooks and Ryan Fakkema.

“Wolfe, Brooks and Fakkema are all excellent players,” Barker said.

New to the team in 2008 are juniors Kevin Flavin and goal keeper Ryan O’Neil, and senior Cody Zimmerman.

“Zimmerman didn’t play last year but he did as a sophomore, and we’ve also brought up John Manni who was on the junior varsity last season,” Barker said.

Playing on the new turf at Wildcat Memorial Stadium, Barker said the team has high expectations.

“We have the experience and talent and if our new goal keeper comes through, we could have a real good chance,” he said.

Oak Harbor jumps right into the WesCo North season playing at Arlington on March 14, and hosts Snohomish at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20.
