Spring Sports Preview: Wildcats hit fairways, greens

A talented group of golfers returns for Oak Harbor High School boys coach John Matzen, now in his 29th year of coaching the Wildcats.

The same can be said for Andy Wesley, who’s in his sixth season as girls head coach.

Junior Phil Reedy and senior Eric McCardle are the two big guns on the boys team.

Both were first-team all-WesCo League players last season and helped qualify the team for the state tournament. Reedy won the WesCo District tournament last year.

Joining Reedy and McCardle are junior Zepher Loesch, who is a student at Coupeville High School, and senior Paul Perez, who Matzen said didn’t play last year, but is a good golfer.

“We also have sophomores Brandon Kenworthy and Dan Klope, who both played on the junior varsity team last year,” Matzen said.

Senior Josh Hunt returns after sitting out last year, and freshman Judd Ford is expected to have an impact on the varsity team.

“Kenworthy, Klope, Hunt and Ford all figure to be in the fight for a position on the varsity team,” Matzen said. “I think we have a very strong team this year and should give Snohomish and Kamiak a run for their money.”

Senior first-team all-league golfer Andrea Sutter leads the Oak Harbor girls.

“She made it to the second round of the state tournament last year,” Wesley said.

Joining Sutter is senior Brittnney Loveng, who also qualified for the state tournament in 2007.

Both girls have set goals to do better this year,” Wesley said.

“I would like to finish in the top 20 at the state tournament,” Sutter said.

Senior Brittany Rickman and juniors Shelby Hamming and Kay Lee are also returning this season, in addition to sophomores Tiffany Earnhart and Melanie Cone.

New players include sophomores Ashley Johnson and Tara Stratton.

“I think we have a good chance to win the league championship this year,” Loveng said. “It’s going to be exciting.”

The Wildcats have two outstanding courses they call home, the Whidbey Golf and Country Club and the Gallery Golf Course.

The girls open the season Thursday, March 12, hosting

Arlington at Whidbey Golf and Country Club at 3 p.m. The boys play Snohomish and Kamiak in a 3 p.m. match Monday, March 17, at Whidbey Golf and Country Club.
