Backed by Brandon Wells' two-hitter, the North Whidbey Little League 10/11 all-star team started District 11 tournament play with a 4-1 win over Central Whidbey Sunday, July 1, at Sedro-Woolley.
North Whidbey now faces the winner of Sedro-Woolley/Burlington at 6 p.m. Monday, July 2.
Coach Dave Delano said Wells pitched "a great, great game." Delano said in addition to Wells' performance, the entire NWLL club was solid: "I couldn't be more proud of the team effort."
Both teams played well, Delano said. "Honestly, it was one of the better games I have seen." The teams combined for only three errors, one by North Whidbey.
North Whidbey got things started with a three-run second. With bases load, Tim Sellers singled and Tim Steinke hit a sacrifice fly to plate the runs.
In the fifth, David Levy displayed "great base running," according to Delano, when he scored all the way from first on an errant pickoff attempt by the Central Whidbey catcher.
