Josh Bayne made his debut as a starting pitcher a memorable one, throwing a three-hit shutout to lead the Coupeville Legion A baseball team to a 4-0 win over visiting Burlington Monday, June 4.
The win evened the Merchants record a 2-2. Coupeville goes to Burlington at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, and then hosts Mount Vernon at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Bayne pitched no-hit ball the final four innings and was aided by a strong defense which turned three double plays.
Burlington loaded the bases with no outs in the third. Bayne induced the No. 3 hitter into a third-to-home-to-first double play and then got the cleanup hitter on a grounder to escape the rally.
Coupeville broke open the scoreless game with three runs in the fourth. A walk, error, an RBI single by Morgan Payne and an RBI groundout by Aaron Trumbull highlighted the inning.
In the sixth, Wade Schaef singled, stole second and scored on Trumbull's base hit.
Kurtis Smith finished 2-for-3 with a triple.
