Capturing its fifth consecutive league title, the Coupeville tennis team squeaked by visiting Friday Harbor 3-2 Monday, April 23.
The win was the Wolves second straight this season over Friday Harbor in the best of three series to determine the winner of their two-team league. The final match is this Friday in Friday Harbor.
Coupeville won both singles matches. Emily Burchfield avenged a loss earlier to Rebecca Leff with a thrilling 1-6, 6-1, 10-5 win. Allie Hanigan took second singles 6-1, 6-1.
In first doubles, Amanda d'Almeida and Lexi Blanchette cruised 6-2, 6-0.
Coach Ken stange called Burchfield's match "the most exiting" of the day. Burchfield overcame a slow start and a rolled ankle to grab the win.
He said Hanigan was "in the driver's seat from point one," and that d'Almeida and Blanchette "have great chemistry and are looking to make a deep postseason run."
Grayson Akins and Holly Craggs fell 4-8 in second doubles in match shortened to meet the ferry schedule.
In third doubles, Makenna Martyn and Julia Myers lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-10.
Coupeville won in second and third doubles in the first match with the Wolverines.
Stange said, "Overall, I was pleased that we were able to pull out the win and the season series…That said, I truly felt that we could have and should have won the two matches we lost. It will give us some motivation at practice the next few days as we prepare to try and sweep the series."Contact Whidbey News Times Sports editor Jim Waller at firstname.lastname@example.org or 360-675-6611 ext. 5060.
