Oak Harbor dominated the winners' circle but not the meet as the Wildcats finished third in the 11-team district swim and dive tournament at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11.
Seven Wildcats qualified for the state meet at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 16 to 18.
Oak Harbor won seven of the 12 events but finished in the top six in only three others. Shorewood, with 17 top-six finishes, and Shorecrest, with 13, used their depth to finish ahead of Oak Harbor in the team scoring 322-275-221.
Senior Jacob Jepsen (200-yard free, 1:46.06; 100 back, 55.88) and his junior brother Josh (200 individual medley, 2:02.11; 100 breast, 1:02.88) each won two individual events, and sophomore Caley Powers (100 fly, 55.8) added another. The three hooked up with sophomore Kevin Levy to capture a pair of relay titles (200 medley, 1:43.06; 200 free, 1:32.57).
Jacob Jepsen's 200 freestyle time smashed his old school record of 1:47.78.
Levy also earned state spots by finishing third in the 50 free (23.43) and in the 400 free relay (3.39.88) with freshmen Dakota Powers and Toren Wood and junior John Kaltenbach.
Kaltenbach added a wild card state spot in diving after finishing fifth (239 points) at district.
Coach Amy Merkley was happy with her team's effort: "They all swam very well."
The Jepsens are veterans of several state meets. Last winter Jacob Jepsen was ninth in the 100 breaststroke and 10th in the 200 individual medley, while Josh Jepsen placed 12th in the 100 breaststroke and 13th in the IM. They swam together on relay teams that placed sixth and ninth. Caley Powers also participated in the 2011 state meet.
