Oak Harbor closes out frantic week | Wrestling

Wrapping up a busy week of wrestling, Oak Harbor swept a double-dual meet at Hazen in Renton Friday, Jan. 13, and finished fifth at the Jack Reynolds Tournament of Excellence at Mercer Island High School Saturday.

The Wildcats, coming off a double-dual meet Tuesday and a dual meet Thursday, defeated Hazen 60-10 and previously unbeaten Highline 42-28 Friday in an event featuring pancreatic cancer awareness.

Hazen coach Rory Magana, a 2002 Oak Harbor graduate, lost his father, Oak Harbor resident Rod Magana, to the disease in June.

The event raised $1,500, according to Rory Magana.

Oak Harbor, led by Joshua Crebbin’s first-place finish at 152 pounds, scored 130 points and placed fifth out of 10 teams at Mercer Island. Yelm won with 185 points.

The Wildcats wrestled both days without the services of four starters out with injuries and did not field a wrestler at 113 pounds.

At Renton, Oak Harbor picked up a pair of wins from Jeremy Vester (106 pounds), Jahleel Vester (120), Ben Pralle (126), Mark Johnston (132), Sheyenne Sams (145), Crebbin (152), David Payne (160) and CJ Shavers (170).

One of the highlights was Jahleel Vester’s 7-4 win over Highline’s 10th-ranked Brandon Gilbertson.

Wildcat coach Mike Crebbin said, “We wrestled well for a good cause.”

At Mercer Island, 10 other Wildcats placed along with Crebbin. Jahleel Vester finished second; Johnston third; Jeremy Vester fourth; and Pralle, Nathanael Stanford (138), Sams, Shavers, Collin Higingbotham (170), Ray Quinday (220) and Ben Dugin (285) tied for fifth.

Oak Harbor (4-1, 12-2) goes to Mountlake Terrace (0-5, 0-8) Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m.
