Ouch!
Lakewood's Caitlyn Darrah stunned the Coupeville High School girls basketball team with a game-winning three-point shot with three seconds left to lift the host Cougars to a 46-45 win Wednesday, Jan. 11.
The Wolves, looking for their first conference win, trailed 14-10 and 23-20 after the first two quarters but took a 33-29 lead into the final period.
Lakewood (1-6, 1-12) came back as the two teams continued the close contest and were knotted at 43 when Katie Smith coolly sank two free throws with 11 seconds left to give the Wolves the lead. Then came Darrah's heroics, hitting her fourth three-pointer of the game.
Smith topped Coupeville with 15 points, and Cassidi Rosenkrance chipped in with 11. Taya Boonstra added eight, Hailey Hammer six and Bessie Walstad five.
Coupeville (0-7, 1-10) heads to Cedarcrest (5-2, 9-4) Friday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m.
