By two-timing the Shoreline schools Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Oak Harbor wrestling team set up a show down with Everett Thursday, Jan. 12, in Oak Harbor at 7 p.m. that is likely to determine the Wesco 3A champion.
Everett, the defending league champion and currently ranked seventh in the state, and unranked Oak Harbor are the two top dogs in Wesco this winter, and barring an upset, should finish 1-2 in the final league standings -- the order to be determined Thursday.
At Shorecrest Tuesday, Oak Harbor defeated the Scots 54-25 and Shorewood 52-15.
The Wildcats received double wins from Jeremy Vester (106 pounds; pin, forfeit), Nathanael Stanford (138; pin, 14-4), Sheyenne Sams (145; pin, 10-6), David Payne (152/160; pin, 11-7), Collin Higingbotham (182; pin, pin) and Hunter Vail (220, pin, pin).
Also picking up wins against Shorecrest (1-3, 3-4) were Ben Pralle (126, pin), Mark Johnston (132, pin) and Joshua Crebbin (160, pin).
Other winners against Shorewood (2-1, 4-2) were Kylene Ayer (113, forfeit), CJ Shavers (170, pin), Jeremy Alonzo (192, pin) and Ray Quinday (285, pin).
The Wildcats (4-0, 10-1) are in the midst of a busy week of wrestling. In addition to the Shoreline and Everett matches, Oak Harbor travels to Renton for a double-dual meet with Hazen, Highline and Chief Sealth Friday, Jan. 13, at 5 p.m., and then takes part in the Tournament of Excellence at Mercer Island High School Saturday at 10 a.m.Contact Whidbey News Times Sports editor Jim Waller at email@example.com or 360-675-6611 ext. 5060.
