Wildcat United dominates middle school championships | Cross Country

Wildcat United produced a dominating performance at the seven-team middle school cross country championships in Mount Vernon Thursday, Oct. 27.

Wildcat United, a team of combined runners from Oak Harbor and North Whidbey middle schools and coached by Mary Ann Duhrkopf and Mike Briddell, earned individual first-place finishes in three of the four races.

The most impressive race for Oak Harbor was the eighth-grade girls. Mariel Empinado (9:44) won by 43 seconds and Wildcat United snared 10 of the top 16 spots.

In seventh-grade girls, Kaitlyn Chelberg (9:33) and Carolynn Wicker (9:48) went 1-3 and teammates claimed five of the next 14 places.

Logan Clark (8:41) was the eighth-grade boys winner, and Kegan Snell (9:37) grabbed the highest Oak Harbor finish in seventh-grade boys by placing eighth.
