Both the returning members and the new faces will play key roles in the success of this year’s Oak Harbor High School cheer team, according to head coach Robin Gohn.
One of the team’s strengths is its experience, as 18 of last year’s 31 members return. Gohn said the veterans will also “bring dedication” to the squad.
Of the 18, 15 are returning varsity letter winners: Elizabeth Adkins, Racheal Balasa, Jade Brown, Micaiah Davis, Desiree Dillaman, Mariah Dozhier, Molly Murdock, Brittany Rogers, Makaila Owens, Sadie Strain, Briana Thrift, Jillian White, Rebecca White, Ellie Williamson and Cristey Wolniakowski.
Those returnees will blend with the newcomers to lead the Wildcats.
Gohn said, “All our new cheerleaders this season will be key players on the team. They are the Wildcat cheer future, and each one plays an important role in the success of the fall season.”
Gohn’s biggest concern heading into the season is that the “new cheerleaders will need to prove academic success and learn time management” to keep up with a demanding schedule.
As far as her goals for the season, Gohn said, “I expect this season to be full of energy, commitment and support for the fall athletes at OHHS. Our season is dedicated to spreading the word and filling the stands with Oak Harbor support, not just with family members of the student athletes but with people who live and work in Oak Harbor and the surrounding areas.”
She added, “Our mission is to show the fall athletes that the Wildcat cheerleaders are there for them by offering positive spirit and enthusiasm throughout their season, on and off the playing field.”Contact Whidbey News Times Sports editor Jim Waller at firstname.lastname@example.org or 360-675-6611 ext. 5060.
