Fastpitch: Wolves can't overcome sloppy inning

A sloppy third inning was the undoing of the Coupeville fastpitch team as it lost 12-4 at Lakewood Friday, March 25.

The Wolves jumped out in front with three runs in the second inning as Rebecca Armstrong, Madi Roberts and Sydney Aboricio scored.

The Cougars (3-1, 2-1) took the lead with seven runs in the third inning with the help of three Coupeville errors.

The Wolves didn’t score again until the sixth inning when Roxy Piechowski drove in Roberts.

The Wolves had other opportunities to score but left the bases loaded three times.

Coach Jackie Calkins said her team needs to work on “leaving runners on the bases” and “watching strikes at the plate.”

Roberts paced the Wolves, going 4-for-5 with a double. Armstrong added two hits and a run, and Alexis Trumbull had a hit and two walks.

Not all was bad for the Coupeville defense. Twice shortstop Piechowski fired to catcher Bessie Walstad who blocked the plate and nailed two runners trying to score.

Coach Jackie Calkins said, “Aside from the ‘dark’ third inning, defense was strong.”

Coupeville (0-3, 0-2) hosts Archbishop Murphy (2-1, 2-0) Monday, March 28, at 4 p.m.
