Wrestling: Wildcats crush Meadowdale; Trimbur 1st in Lynden Tournament

Behind seven falls, the Oak Harbor High School wrestling team crushed Meadowdale 60-9 on the road Friday, Jan. 21.

The Wildcats also placed ninth at the Lynden Tournament Saturday, Jan. 22. Corey Trimbur took the 103-pound title at the 10-team tournament.

Against Meadowdale (2-3, 2-6), the Wildcats picked up pins from Jahleel Vester (112 pounds, 1:27), Cody Fakkema (119, 1:52), Ryuta Meany (130, 2:43), Joshua Crebbin (152, 1:48), Jeremy Alonzo (189, 1:29), Hunter Vail (215, 3:19) and Raymond Quinday (285, 1:17).

Wildcat winners by decisions were Nathaniel Stanford (135, 10-3), Devin Jensen (145, 9-4), Steven Souza (160, 6-3, double overtime) and Collin Higingbotham (171, 8-2).

Trimbur won by forfeit.

David Payne (140) lost 9-3 and Anthony Smith (125) lost by a fall (1:10).

Sedro-Woolley won the Lynden Tournament with 192.5 points; Oak Harbor scored 88.

Crebbin finished second and Fakkema fifth to join Trimbur among the medalists.

Crebbin recorded three falls before forfeiting the championship match because of a shoulder injury.

Coach Mike Crebbin, Joshua’s father, said, “Corey Trimbur had a great tournament. He wrestled better with each match. Corey pinned a good Mount Baker kid in the first round of his finals match. Joshua Crebbin has turned it on. He redeemed an earlier season loss, by pinning (Jordan) Ferrier from Anacortes in the quarter finals. Unfortunately we forfeited the finals match to protect a shoulder injury from Friday night. Joshua really wanted to wrestle, but this close to sub-regionals I didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks. I plan on holding him out against Lynnwood, too.”

Coach Crebbin said Oak Harbor did not enter wrestlers in three weight brackets, which kept the Wildcats from finishing higher in the team standings.

Brandon Stratton, Oak Harbor’s top wrestler, missed the Meadowdale and Lynden events to attend his brother’s wedding.

Oak Harbor (5-1, 11-5) closes out the regular season Thursday, Jan. 27, at home for Senior Night against Lynnwood (2-4, 3-8) at 7 p.m.
