Swim: Oak Harbor stops Shorecrest, 12th at Kentridge Invitational

The Oak Harbor High School swim and dive team washed aside Shorecrest 110-76 at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool Monday, Jan. 17.

The Wildcats also placed 12th out of 37 teams at the Kentridge Invitational Saturday, Jan. 15.

In the win over Shorecrest (7-3), Jacob Jepsen (100-meter free, 58.84; 100 backstroke, 1:06.94) and Yale Rosen (50 free, 25.03; 100 breaststroke, 1:13.32) led the way by winning two individual events and two relays. The pair joined Price Hu and Ben Cardinal to win the 200 medley relay (1:58.9) and Cardinal and Devin Schell to win the 200 free relay (1:48.01).

Hu also captured the 100 butterfly (1:03.5).

Coupeville's Cole Weinstein won the 200 free (2:10.17) and was second in the 400 (4:30.69).

Coach Amy Nurvic said, "Some of the kids are right where they should be, but others are fighting back from being sick." She hopes to have everyone healthy for the final regular season meet when the Wildcats (5-1, 8-3) host Monroe (0-5, 0-7) Monday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. District is Feb. 11 and 12.

At the Kentridge Invitational, which featured over 700 athletes, Oak Harbor would have finished higher in the team standings, Nurvic said, but several ill swimmers were missing and she mixed up her lineup "somewhat."

The Wildcats received top-10 finishes in the meet from Jepsen (fourth, 100 back, 56.34) and Hu (seventh, 100 fly, 54.97; 10th, 200 individual medley, 2:03.93). The pair also finished 10th in the medley relay (1:45.07) with Rosen and Josh Jepsen.

Weinstein was 15th in the 500 free (5:12.11) and 26th in the 200 free (1:59.45).
