Royal 11th in national cross country race

Oak Harbor High School senior Adrianna Royal placed 11th in the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic cross country championship race in Hoover, Ala., Dec. 11.

The 11th-place finish in the young women's division earned Royal All-American honors.

Royal, who is currently playing basketball for the Wildcats, met her one- and two-mile goals (5:50 and 12:23) in the 5K race, but said she had "a slow third mile" to finish in 20:01.

She said, "With basketball, I haven't trained for distance endurance, but was happy with my mile and two-mile times."

Krista Menghini won the event in 19:02.
