The young Oak Harbor High School wrestling team fell twice in its season-opening double-dual meet at Monroe Friday, Dec. 3
The host Bearcats stopped Oak Harbor 47-21 and Arlington topped the Wildcats 42-33.
Oak Harbor coach Mike Crebbin said, "We wrestled a lot of freshmen. We knew we were going to take our lumps." He added that his wrestlers had a great attitude facing a tough situation: "The kids are doing their jobs, stepping in and competing."
Crebbin said, "Monroe has experience at all weights and Arlington is a good program."
Oak Harbor had to forfeit three weight classes, but Crebbin expects to fill all the slots soon. Injuries, athletes missing practices because of the snow and lack of time for wrestlers to lose weight left Oak Harbor short-handed in the double loss.
Crebbin added that another problem that will haunt the Wildcats all year is that four of his top wrestlers all fall in the same weight class.
Oak Harbor picked up wins in both matches at Monroe from Corey Trimbur, Cody Fakkema, Brandon Stratton and Collin Higingbotham.
The Wildcats travel to Marysville-Pilchuck Thursday, Dec. 9, for a double dual meet with the Tomahawks and Lakewood at 7 p.m.
