Local runners qualify for regional Junior Olympic meet
The Whidbey Island Running Club qualified two teams and a handful of individuals at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle Saturday, Nov. 13, for he regional Junior Olympic cross country meet this Saturday, Nov. 20, in Oregon City, Ore.
Also qualifying for the regional meet were Oak Harbor runners Adrianna Royal and Allison Duvenez, who compete for the Federal Way Track Club. Running in the young women's class (17-18), Royal finished first (20:56) and Duvenez fourth (21.22) over 5,000 meters.
The top 35 individuals and three teams in each age group qualified for regional.
The WIRC midget girls (11-12) earned the team title over five other squads.
Laura Rodeheffer was the top local finisher with a season best 11:38 in the 3,000 meter race, good for third. She was followed by Kaitlyn Chelberg (sixth, career best 11:55), Carolynn Wicker (11th, 13:02), Carly Crowther (40th, 14:33, 2:29 PR from 2009 race) and Breanna Grehan (44th, 15:23, 1:16 PR from 2009 race).
Several areas runners, whose clubs did not field complete midget teams, joined WIRC for the meet and helped capture the group title: Kat Copeland (Olympia, first, 11:22), Sophie Cantine (Sammamish, second, 11:35) and Ariel Wilhite (Lacey, 11th, 12:26).
WIRC finished with 23 points; Whatcom Tesseract was a distant second with 43.
The WIRC youth boys (13-14) finished second in their division, being edged by the Federal Way Track Club 41-46.
WIRC's John Rodeheffer won the 4,000 meter race in 13:31, surging by Bellevue's Aaron Roe in the final 200 meters and narrowly missing the course record.
Next for WIRC were Gavin Stewart (10th, 14:59, 30 second PR), Dakota Powers (13th, 15:03), Cole Zinc (15th, 15:07, career PR), Mark Johnston (29th, 16:38), Gunnar Melnick (36th, 17:16) and Trevor Sanders (40th, 18:58, career PR).

Youth girls (13-14), 4,000 meters: 27, Jonalynn Horn, 18:22.
Intermediate women (15-16), 5,000 meters: 2, Christina Wicker, 20:27.
Bantam Boys (10U), 3,000 meters: 4, Ryan Vasileff, 12:29; 18, Tyler Grehan, 13:43; 20, Justin Vasileff, 16:35.
Midget boys (11-12), 3,000 meters: 11, Adam Nelson, 12:01; 17, Logan Clark, 12:35; 22, Miguel Guzman, 12:51; 30, Caleb Thompson, 13:16.
Intermediate men (15-16), 5,000 meters: 11, Caley Powers, 19:08.
Coach Catie Rodeheffer said, "A pretty good meet for us, especially in only our second full year. Really exciting to have a runner in every age group, and having two full teams was great. We'd obviously like to build on that and get the full five kids in every age group."
