WIRC earns age-group title
The Whidbey Island Running Club's 11/12 girls team won its division in its final tune-up meet at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle Saturday, Oct. 30.
WIRC coach Catie Rodeheffer said the course was "a slippery, muddy mess" as it rained hard the entire day. However, it gave the club an opportunity to run the course that will host the Junior Olympic qualifying race Nov. 13 for all Washington runners. The top 35 individuals and three teams from each age group qualify for the regional finals in Oregon City, Ore., Nov. 20.
The WIRC sent three teams and eight individuals to last Saturday's race.
The 11/12 girls team of Laura Rodefeffer (third, 11:55), Kaitlyn Chelberg (fifth, 12:12), Ariel Whilhite (sixth, 12:16) and Carly Crowther (24th, 14:22) picked up its division title over the 3,000 meter course.
The 13/14 boys team of John Rodeheffer (second, 13:50), Cole Zink (eighth, 16:01) and Trevor Sanders (21st, 20:46) was third.
WIRC placed fourth in 4,000 meter 11/12 boys race: Logan Clark (seventh, 11:47), Caleb Thompson (18th, 13:08) and Miguel Guzman (19th, 13:12).
