Second-place Everett shut down the Oak Harbor girls soccer team 5-0 in the final regular season match at Everett Wednesday, Oct. 27.
Everett (10-4, 11-4-1) scored two goals off set pieces and two from long-range, according to Oak Harbor coach Jeff Laiblin.
Laiblin gave his underclassmen significant playing time, taking a look at the players who will make up next year's team.
He said his team "played a strong game, but Everett was in championship form."
The "player of the game," Laiblin said, was Ashley Everett who shut out the Seagulls' leading scorer, Makalea Nellams, denying her a goal or assist for the first time this year.
Laiblin saw growth over the past year in his team which recorded two wins and 16 goals, up from a winless, goalless season in 2009.
Eight of this year's losses were by two or less goals and the team was competitive in 11 matches as compared to just three last fall.Contact Whidbey News Times Sports editor Jim Waller at firstname.lastname@example.org or 360-675-6611 ext. 5060.
