One goal is all Coupeville needed to defeat host South Whidbey in girls soccer Thursday, Oct. 14.
Amanda d'Almeida fired home a goal 10 minutes into the second half to give the Wolves their winning point.
Meanwhile, the Coupeville defense, with Grace Lapoint subbing for an ill Cassie Babcock in goal, shut down the Falcons.
Coach Mike Thornton said, "Actually we should have had more goals; we had some chances. But we got the one and that was enough."
Thornton said South Whidbey (2-9, 2-10) was physical but his girls "kept their composure." He added, "The girls kept fighting through and played harder."
Unlike a loss earlier in the week to King's, the Wolves "kept their shape on defense," Thornton said. He added, "We also communicated better on the field."
The win over the Falcons helped the Coupeville seniors reach one of their season goals, defeat rival South Whidbey, Thornton said. They doubled their pleasure -- Coupeville also topped the Falcons 2-1 Sept. 23.
Coupeville (2-9, 4-9) and Granite Falls (6-5, 7-6) meet Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Mickey Clark Field at 6 p.m.
