The Coupeville High School volleyball team began the 2010 season by blitzing visiting Friday Harbor 3-1 Wednesday, Sept. 8.
The Wolves begin conference play tonight, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. against defending league co-champion Archbishop Thomas Murphy.
In the win over the Wolverines, Coupeville took the match 25-9, 25-16, 23-25, 25-14.
Coach Toni Crebbin said, "We had a little blip in game three and let them get out from the get go, but other than that we were pretty dominate."
Jessica Riddle pounded out 21 kills and 11 aces for Coupeville, while Laura Chan added nine aces and 31 assists.
On defensive, Crebbin said, "The girls really hustled and came up with balls that appeared to be dead." Taya Boonstra produced a team-high 16 digs.
Crebbin said it was a productive first match for the Wolves and the girls "felt pretty good about it." She added, "The girls tried to do a lot; tried to do some different things."
Kyra Ilyankoff started, which was a positive sign, according Crebbin. Ilyankoff is still recovering from knee surgery and Crebbin wasn't sure at the beginning of the season how soon the returning starter would be able to contribute.
