Wilson sets 4 records in NWAC triathlon

Evan Wilson's record setting performance highlighted the North Whidbey Aquatic Club's triathlon Thursday, Aug. 19.

Wilson was joined in the winners circle by Lauren Rosen, Michael Johnson and Taliah Black.

Wilson set records in all three segments of the junior/senior race to post a new course record of 49:07. The old mark was 52:33. He clocked record times of 18:23 in the 1,600 meter swim, 17:00 in the 4-mile bike ride and 13:44 in the 2-mile run.

Rosen was the top female finisher in the junior/senior race and fourth overall. Her overall (54:52), swim (19:42) and bike (18:59) times were records.

Johnson, in just his first year of racing, captured the gold race in a record setting 39:19.

He combined a 16:14 in the 1,000 meter swim, a 13:10 in the 2.4-mile bike ride and a 9:55 in the 1.2-mile run for the new standard. His bike time was also a record. The old overall record time was 40:28.

Black, in just her first year of swimming, recorded the best female time in the gold race and was fourth overall in 42:03.

The junior/senior race featured the athletes from NWAC's top two training groups. The gold race included those from the middle of the five NWAC training groups.

NWAC coach Neil Romney said all but one athlete in the two races set personal records by "significant margins." He added that the average time in both races was several minutes faster than in 2009.

Bon Bianco, Lauren Vagt, Autumn Robinson and Cullen Wood, along with Wilson, Rosen, Johnson and Black, received performance award nominations.

In the junior/senior race, Bainco recorded the second fastest time ever in the run (14:07); Vagt annihilated the girls run record of 16:05 with a 14:29 and Robinson, according to Romney, had a "breakout effort with aggressive racing start to finish."

In the gold race, Wood's time of 39:21 was the fastest ever for a 10-and-under racer and broke the previous course record.
