NWAC puts in strong showing at PNS championships

Price Hu's victory and junior national qualifying time highlighted the North Whidbey Aquatic Club's performance at the Pacific Northwest Swimming Championships at the Weyeraeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way July 29 through Aug. 1.

Hu posted a 2:08.22 while winning the boys 15-and-over 200 butterfly to earn the national time. His brother John finished second in the race in 2:08.22.

The NWAC captured two other gold medals at the meet.

Laura Rosen, who also picked up three seconds, won the girls 13-14 200 butterfly in 2:25.39, and Ethan Tack took the boys 10-and-under 50 butterfly in 35.64.

In all, the NWAC produced 50 performances that finished in the top eight at the championships. Thirty-two local swimmers qualified for the meet.

John Hu finished in the money in 10 events: 200 free, 4, 2:00.1; 200 breaststroke, 7, 2:35.47; 100 fly, 2, 2:08.62; 100 fly, 6, 59.35; 200 individual medley, 2, 2:12.1; 400 IM, 3, 4:4:42.8; 200 free relay, 8, 1:43.57, and 400 free relay, 8, 3:45.57 (both with Evan Wilson, Jacob Jepsen and Josh Jepsen); 200 medley relay, 7, 1:54.02, and 400 medley relay, 5, 4:06.34 (both with Wilson, Price Hu and Jacob Jepsen).

Kelly Huffer (girls 10-and-under), Olivia Tungate (girls 10-and-under) and Rosen each placed nine times.

Huffer: 100 free, 4, 1:13.58; 200 free, 3, 2:39.84; 400 free, 6, 5:36.64; 100 back, 2, 1:21.36; 50 fly, 4, 36.54; 100 fly, 3, 1:23.12; 200 IM, 4, 2:59.5; 200 free relay, 7, 2:31.52 and 200 medley relay, 4, 2:44.59 (both with Tungate, Taliah Black and Samantha Hines).

Tungate: 100 free, 6, 1:14.21; 200 free, 5, 2:42.07; 400 free, 7, 5:40.15; 100 breast, 5, 1:39.65; 50 fly, 37.78; 100 fly, 4, 1:25.19; 200 IM, 7, 3:01.57; and the relays.

Rosen: 200 free, 3, 2:11.81; 400 free, 4, 4:38.53; 800 free, 2, 9:33.69; 100 breast, 5, 1:19.52, 200 breast, 2, 2:46.48; 200 fly, 1, 2:25.39; 200 IM, 2, 2:25.92; 400 IM, 4, 5:13.58; 400 medley relay, 8, 4:59.44 (with Emily Huffer, Emily Schroeder and Lauren Vagt).

Wilson placed in four individual events as well as the four relays: 100 breast, 5, 1:08.96; 200 breast, 2, 2:29.67; 200 IM, 3, 2:12.43; and 400 IM, 6, 4:48.31.

Tack added five other top-eight finishes to his win in the 50 fly: 200 free, 5, 2:32.41; 400 free, 3, 5:44.01; 100 back, 5, 1:23.43; 100 fly, 2, 1:23.57; and 200 IM, 4, 3:03.33.

Bon Jarik Bainco was seventh in the boys 13-14 100 breast (1:19.15) and 200 breast (2:52.56); Marissa Morris placed fifth in the girls 11-12 1,500 free (20:46.35); and Ciara Hu was fourth in the girls 15-and-over 200 fly (2:22.17).
