Time is now to take action on dangerous intersection

Editor,

FDR once said, “It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another, but above all try something.”

Whether the state has plans for a round-a-bout or traffic lights, the intersection with Banta Road, Northgate Terrace and State Highway 20 is long overdue for some action.

The recent accident was not the first and, unfortunately, won’t be the last.

The odds are not getting better as we wait for a solution. Just down the road by Deception Pass State Park is a traffic light, 40 mph speed limit and plenty of visibility of vehicles coming either direction.

Back at the other intersection, it’s 50 mph with no lights and poor visibility, particularly with vehicles coming south on Highway 20.

If fact, some of those vehicles are turning onto Banta Road which, depending on size and speed, can block the view of vehicles following as they zip pass the turning vehicle.

It’s time the state put the dice down and started doing instead of debating a solution or waiting on a better fiscal year. Reduced speed is an easy fix, but it’s also just a start. The state needs to act now and leave the gambling to the casinos.
