Community needs Proposition 1

Many people expressing opposition to Proposition 1 are saying that Island County should only fund “essential” services such as law and justice. And the commissioners should eliminate parks, WSU Extension Services, 4-H, and the like. If we live in a “community” and not on just separate pieces of property, it is “essential” to have community services.

It sounds like folks that are opposed to funding a wide range of services say the same thing about schools, buses and libraries. “Since I don’t use the library and don’t ride the bus and don’t have children in school, why should I pay for them?” Because we are a community! Communities in this nation include schools, libraries, hospitals, youth activities, buses and all manner of public and private services.

Friends, do we want to live here together or just survive as individuals? Proposition 1 will keep our county services functioning to a reasonable extent. It is needed for the good of the community.

Please vote yes on Proposition 1.
