Downtown needs an attitude change

My wife and I have owned a business in downtown Oak Harbor for almost six years. The economics of the last two plus years has been a difficult time for us as it has for many. We look at the near future and wonder if we are capable of hanging on much longer. We have tired of the constant bickering, whining and general distrust of the city and their plans that many downtown merchants continue to carry on about.

I think it is really time to get over it and make the best of our situation. We have the rest of 2010 to actually try and do some positive things for our respective business endeavors. We need to work together to create some positive activities and events to bring shoppers to our stores. We have seen the results that all this negativity has brought. When children don’t always get their way they respond by throwing fits and tantrums ... we as adults need to pick up and move forward. Look to the future with hope and be excited about what downtown can and will become.

If we used the time and energy many of you waste on complaining, we might be amazed at what the results could be. Let’s make the best of the time we have before construction begins. Give ideas and suggestions to the Merchants Association. Let’s do something positive and constructive to help us all in these trying times.
