Island Transit: A local jewel

Hundreds of residents of the Stanwood/Camano community braved bone-chilling weather Nov. 21 to enjoy inaugural activities surrounding the new Amtrak Cascades train stop — and Island Transit played a major role in the event’s success.

This comes as no surprise — after all, Island Transit has been recognized as the best small-transit system in the United States — but it is no less appreciated. Island Transit provided buses to take more than 140 residents to Everett so that they could ride the first train to stop in Stanwood in nearly 35 years.

I doubt anyone present will forget this historic day — or how nicely they were treated by Island Transit and the friendly, outgoing drivers who made the ride a first-class experience for everyone on board. That kind of genuine warmth can’t be faked, and is just one more reason Island Transit wins the accolades it does.

Island Transit’s invaluable service takes cars off our busy roads, gives many people the ability to participate in our community, and is a local jewel. We are a better community for Island Transit.
