Public servants serve selves
Just tell your readers that you have a source who knows a lot about the Republican party from long experience, that he knows all the key movers and shakers, and he has a bit of advice: People should not vote for any Republican because they’re dangerous, dishonest and self-serving. I have come to realize the Democrats really do care about people who need help from government; Republicans care most about those who will only get richer because of government help ... the government is truly broken.
This is the last paragraph of John Dean’s 2007 epic “Broken Government.” Dean was Richard Nixon’s White House counselor, convicted and resurrected. The quote is a contribution from an old Republican associate of Dean’s.
In applying these reflections to the local scene, we find:
A. A corporate sponsored candidate for re-election whose record seems to exclude even a shred of empathy for the district’s needy constituents.
B. A crony appointee who would continue to squander the heritage of island beauty by promoting its conversion into a treeless plain of single family warrens and commercial eyesores.
C. An incompetent crony appointee whose (partisan?) voter pamphlet antics are corrected only grudgingly.
D. Officials who hold the public in contempt by colluding in private with property owners to maximize their profits at the expense of public safety and citizen concerns.
Is it not urgent to consider which Republican, if any, escape the indictment of Dean’s Republican associate?
