The question is, where should that ‘sound’ be? | Letters

Regarding the Whidbey News-Times full-page ad supporting “The Sound of Freedom,” on the back page of your Sept. 14 issue, I would like to offer the following comments.

It is truly wonderful to see patriotism and support for the Sound of Freedom. As patriots, we too support the Sound of Freedom.

The question is where should that “sound” be?

Should it be where the environmental specialists tell us health is unaffected? Where airport safety experts say it is safe? Where it is consistent with EPA and NIOSH rules that every other employer in USA has to obey?

That’s what Citizens of the Ebey’s Reserve (COER) supports — the Sound of Freedom in the “right place.”

We are sure that those 62 businesses and individuals that support the Sound of Freedom did not intend their full-page ad to mean that their support trumps reason and caring — that their support means blindly ignoring damage to citizens’ lives or usurping their hard-earned investments.

We are sure those good businesses support the development of the Environmental Impact Statement that will not only help protect the future of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, but also the well-being of all Whidbey Island citizens who have supported the 51 signing businesses, as we do and will continue to do.

Therefore, we encourage all COER members and sympathizers to understand the position those businesses have had to take, and to continue trusting and supporting their establishments and commendable service.

Ken Pickard, President
Citizens of the Ebey’s Reserve
