Election 2004: Let professionals count ballots

I’ve been hearing about the governor’s race and how the count is so close, and it made me think the way we are counting votes is completely wrong.

I’m not putting down any government types or herds of retired volunteers, other than their way of counting isn’t working very well, but we should be using the people who specialize in dealing with huge numbers of transactions with extreme accuracy, for example, VISA, EBAY or the casino folks in Vegas, or even one of the stock exchanges. They handle millions of transactions every day, not just every few years. They have identification and privacy in place, and do it with admirable accuracy. Could you imagine NASDAQ telling someone, “We’re not sure how much stock you have. We’ll have to recount it a few times?” Or VISA not knowing how many customers they had, ... “We’ll get back to you in January.”

Oops, sorry. There I go trying to inject logic and reason into a government process.
