This letter is in response to the one concerning the inter-lock device for sailors, “Give sailors DUI device,” Oct. 6. I wonder if that gentleman is aware of the legal issues involved? Not to mention the little fact that we still live in a free country. This is government interference of the most pathetic sort. The inter-lock for only military members -- what about the spouses or their children who drive the family car? Who is going to pay for this atrocity? Not all military members can afford two vehicles, and the stigma of the inter-lock would also be lost, or it could ruin the insurance ratings of a whole segment of society. It is penalizing the decisions of the majority of the men and women who join the military.

This is the equivalent of the old signs in yards on the East Coast that read, “Sailors and dogs keep off the grass.” I would dearly love to know why you sincerely believe that this would be beneficial. Very few military members drink and drive anymore, and those who do are the same ones who would do so as civilians. I’m sorry to tell you this, but you need to go back to the drawing board or quit thinking quite so much.
