Elections: Cartoon unfair to loyal official

The editorial cartoon that was printed in the Oct. 26 issue of the Whidbey News-Times was a new low in gutter politics. It was extremely disparaging of a dedicated, loyal county elected official.

I worked with Mrs. Sauter during most of my 10 years as County Auditor (1981 to 1990). There was never any allegation by the State Auditor that any money had been mishandled or lost during that time. There was only a disagreement about the mechanics of receiving and accounting for the taxpayers’ money.

Mrs. Sauter, as county treasurer, kept the county money fully invested and undoubtedly made more money for the county than any of her predecessors. She is an honest, faithful public servant.

You should extend to her a public apology for having printed this most scurrilous and unwarranted cartoon.
