War: Watch out for retribution

I hear that the Dow has dropped to its lowest level in four years. A friend tells me it took a plunge every time George W. Bush made another pitch for his war with Iraq. Apparently a climate of fear is no healthier for the free market than it is for the human spirit.

We are encouraged to worry about the weapons of Saddam Hussein, a ruthless dictator who sits on top of one of the worldÂ’s largest oil reserves, and whose country (unlike Saudi Arabia) has no known connection with al Qaeda or Sept. 11. But many of us worry that Bush will succeed in providing Saddam with the opportunity to present himself as the victim of aggression by the richest, most powerful and most heavily armed nation on earth. And about the retribution that will almost certainly follow such an action.
