County money: Cut salaries, not 4-H budget

I am an eight year 4-H parent and supporter. I have seen 4-H turn troubled children into solid citizens. I have seen families grow closer through 4-H. So why is it the forecast 2003 county budget cuts for 4-H total 28 percent — the highest department cut in the county?

Commissioners McDowell, Shelton and Thorn should realize that just one item — the long-term savings in juvenile detention alone — would merit the continuation of current 4-H funding levels. We citizens would be better off cutting some high county salaries rather than let our future — our children — suffer.

Please think about what you are doing, commissioners. A large number of your constituents support you, are 4-H connected, and truly wish you will do the right thing when it comes to this vital children’s program.
