I really appreciate seeing the article “Nurturing Nursing Moms (News-Times, Aug. 4).” The increase in education about breastfeeding over the past two or three decades has been much needed. I talk to women all the time who raised children in the ’70s and were encouraged to use formula, saying that it was just as good if not better than breast milk. Fortunately, these misconceptions are being corrected and more women are being encouraged to breastfeed.

When I was pregnant, I educated myself about breastfeeding and got connected with the local La Leche League. When my daughter was born, the nursing relationship did not “just happen” and I relied heavily on the support of La Leche and my family and close friends. My 9-month-old daughter and I are now experiencing all the benefits of breastfeeding and I’m so glad there were ample resources for me to turn to.

Thank you for bringing to light the need for continued education and support of nursing moms.
