Education is the key
July 3, 2008 · Updated 8:55 PM
Perhaps if potential adopters were referred to American Staffordshire Bull Terrier Web sites, such as www.pitbulllovers.com, it would help the situation for these dogs. These, and other Web sites are jam packed with information about the breed, training and people to contact for advice. Perhaps, too, this information could be printed out by shelter employees for potential adopters. Education is the best tool against fear and discrimination against this fine breed. It may not be for everyone but much of the blame laid on these dogs for their behavior belongs at the other end of the leash ... the original owner!
You owe it to the dogs, and your shelter to educate people about this terrific breed. They are used as bomb detection dogs, therapy dogs, obedience dogs and work in K-9 law enforcement.
Thank you for all that you do for the poor unfortunate dogs in the shelter.
