I am writing to thank the Whidbey News-Times for the Oct. 6 article about our son, Stephen Mattson, concerning his re-enlistment being the 1,000th for the 8th Brigade in Iraq. We were very surprised to see the article in the paper! We are very proud of him!

We were not thrilled about Stephen being in Iraq because of the danger there. However we are pleased to see how beneficial Stephen’s army career has been so far and that he has found his place in life because of the army.

We look forward to his return to the states and time at home on leave after his return from Iraq.

The information came from an interview army personnel conducted with Stephen and I would like to make one correction: he does not have an uncle who was in the Marine Corps.

To our community, we would appreciate prayers for all of our service members who are serving outside of our nation’s borders.

Thank you again,

Bruce, Michele, and Caroline Mattson
