Letters to the Editor

Highway work does little

I have to pass on a “well done” to letter writer Byron Kistler for his analysis of the road construction from Swantown Road to S.W. 24th Avenue.

I also live up in that area and I agree with his concerns for fire trucks and ambulances being able to navigate this very narrow stretch. I have lived up there for over 20 years and I, for the life of me, can’t figure out why we needed wider sidewalks and one on each side. On rare occasions do you ever see anyone walking in this area.

I don’t see “my nickel” at work, just wasted. I predict that within 10 years DOT will see the error of their ways and we will see these sidewalks ripped out and a real widening project happen. As for the 9-feet being taken off the top of this hill, I don’t see where that happened either, 9- inches maybe.

It also amazes me that they can’t finish repaving because of the weather, but when I drive off the island I see paving going on everywhere, such as the new highway project to Burlington. Why are we different? I echo Mr. Kistler in asking what was accomplished in this project?
