Walker is doing his job with integrity | Letters
I find it very curious that there has been so much passionate “support” for the recently fired North Whidbey Aquatic Club Coach Neil Romney. The letters to the editor and the front page photo of teenagers waving signs reek of an intense political campaign that aims at swaying public opinion without addressing the actual issue.
Although the letters all comment on Romney’s coaching ability, as far as I can tell, no one has claimed that Neil Romney was not a good coach. Rather, by his own admission, he was fired for not doing what his employer asked. Reading between the lines, it seems that there may also have been some financial misconduct by Romney and/or his administrative assistant, Vikki Robinson.
North Whidbey Park and Recreation District Director Bill Walker deserves kudos for having to deal with the turmoil that he apparently stepped into when he took on this job last summer.
He seems to be working hard to lead the district through this now turbulent transition. I wonder how Ms. Schroeder and Ms. Pape would have had him deliver the news that Romney had been fired?
If sending out an email and inviting the swim team to a public meeting to discuss the issue was not transparent, open and honest, what would have been better? Giving out hints beforehand that the firing would take place on a certain date? It is so easy to sling accusations, but less so to offer solutions. Shame on you people calling for his termination when he’s just doing his job, which he appears to be doing with integrity and diligence.
