Ebey’s Reserve event succeeds
November 13, 2011 · Updated 5:43 AM
Thank you to everyone who turned out for the Ebey’s Forever Community Potluck and Conference last weekend. As the event gets closer each year, and we get immersed in logistics, it becomes easy to “get into the weeds.” a whirlwind of details are at the forefront of our responsibilities – and sometimes the goal of the conference begins to take a backseat while we sort through our the endless list of tasks.
Finally, Friday evening comes. The gathering begins. People arrive with food and smiles. They bring their families, meet with neighbors and friends and fill a drink and their plate with homemade cooking. The Crockett Barn grows full of voices and people engaging in the festivities of the evening, offering support on many levels. through their presence and their applause, or their wallets, or their work or their delicious food. As always, volunteers are everywhere, working away without any expectation of reward, from the kindness of their hearts.
This is “community” at its finest, what has now become a tradition of people gathering under the roof of a barn, eating, laughing and taking delight in the surrounding company.
The conference continues that sense of engagement. Partnerships old and new are explored and cultivated throughout the day. Ideas are discussed, locally grown food from the reserve is abundant and shared. Our past, present and future are topics of great discourse. The surrounding landscape is examined in depth by people whose lives are enriched by the sense of place we all share here. As the event begins to wind down and folks are eating pie, surrounded by local farmers with sweet music filling the room, it is clear why gathering is so important, to recognize and connect with this place we call home.
To all of those who made this event another success story, and there are a lot of you, we are so grateful. We look forward to seeing everyone at the potluck again next year. Same time. Same place.
