Respect lacking at football game
October 26, 2010 · Updated 2:44 PM
I have served my country for almost 23 years. I was very mad, disappointed and embarrassed at the lack of respect and patriotism our youth showed during the presentation of our colors at Wildcat Memorial Stadium on Friday night. The Canadian flag and anthem were also displayed to show respect for the team the Wildcats were playing.
Most people are aware of the challenges and issues the United States is faced with but we still live in the greatest free country in the world. Our flag represents everything we cherish and stand for. There is great freedom in our country and with that comes great responsibility. It’s our duty to show honor and respect for the many men and women including six of my friends and coworkers who have died fighting for the very things we stand for.
Respect and patriotism for our country starts in the home. The mentorship should continue in our schools and community. I talked to my three teenagers and had them read this letter I have written to the editor. Parents please talk to your children and discuss the importance of showing respect for our Stars and Stripes.
Oak Harbor is a great community and should be the example.
