Hundreds of happy backpackers

For 11 years this community has generously supported the Opportunity Council’s Back Pack Program that provides backpacks and school supplies to very low income and homeless children. This year was no exception.

Thanks are due to many people starting with the North Whidbey Lions Club. These volunteers kick off this event by collecting supplies from shoppers. Lions, you are the best!

Thanks to Cathy Niiro with United Way for arranging the school bus and Oak Harbor School District for providing it. Thank you to bus driver Bob for taking time during your Saturday to drive the bus and Walmart for the space to operate our drive.

Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce and Jill Johnson held a collection event and their efforts were admirable. Numerous organizations contributed, including Oak Harbor United Methodist, Whidbey Presbyterian, Oak Harbor Church of Christ, St. Augustine’s, Christian Reformed, Windermere Oak Harbor, Alpha Delta Kappa and many others who dropped off donations and didn’t leave their name. Thanks to the many community members who so willingly donated supplies and fund. Your gifts provided over 360 children the right start on their first day of school. Our appreciation is unending!
