Editorial: Mail your ballot
March 6, 2009 · 3:18 PM
With Island County’s time-lapse voting process, it’s easy to forget there’s an election going on. The three-week vote-by-mail process is tedious, and could only look interesting if somehow filmed in extreme slow motion. Many people still have their ballots on the kitchen table, and may have forgotten that this election is about to end, on Tuesday, March 10.
So shake your groggy head, snap to attention and get busy voting. This is a crucial time for the Oak Harbor School District. If it suffers levy failure, the cuts made to date, mainly in support areas, will pale as the school board will have no choice but to slice into the meat of the education program.
This is not a good year to be asking voters for money, not with the extreme concerns about the economy. But the former levy’s four years is about up, and an extension is needed to maintain our educational program. Levy 1 will keep those programs function, and is a necessity. Levy 2 would provide students additional help in math. It too is necessary if we want to send our students out into the world with the tools they need to succeed. It’s tough out there, and without a solid understanding of math it will be hard to succeed.
But whatever your position on the levies, it’s vital to be part of the process so the community’s true intent is known. Mark your ballots, and make sure they’re postmarked not later than Tuesday, March 10.
