Christmas in July is one of Oak Harbor’s most heart-warming traditions. People take time out from their vacations, warm weather activities and family gatherings to help the needy at a time when we don’t normally think of such folks. The point of Christmas in July, which supports North Whidbey Help House, is that people are hungry all year long, not just during the holidays, and they need our help.

Help House’s pantry for the needy is in need of replenishing. A number of community activities, such as car washes and other fund-raisers, are scheduled this week. The biggest push will occur Saturday, July 16, when volunteers will stand outside Safeway, Albertson’s and Saars to ask food shoppers for donations of groceries and money.

When you see these volunteers, recognize that they’re out on a sunny Saturday trying to help others. Be generous in your contributions of food and dollars to Help House and the needy of North Whidbey. In return you’ll feel a bit of Christmas cheer in July.
