Vernie A. Deardeuff passed away peacefully on Feb. 28, 2018 at the age of 96.

Vernie was born Jan. 11, 1922 in Crocker, Mo., the first of seven children of Yager and Ethel Shelton Deardeuff. He married Maxine Pemberton on Feb. 9, 1949. Vernie and Maxine joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1955 and their marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles LDS Temple in 1956. Together they raised seven children. Following the death of Maxine on March 3, 1987, he married Ruth Ilene Jensen Whalen on May 21, 1988. Ruth died Jan. 27, 2018.

Vernie was raised on a farm in Crocker, Mo. where he worked alongside his father until the age of 17, when he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. At age 20, at the beginning of World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy. He trained to be an aircraft mechanic and gunner, and served in the South Pacific on the island of New Caledonia. He served in the Berlin Airlift where he flew 97 rescue missions. He also made three overseas deployments with the Navy in the Far East. He retired after 22 years of service in 1965.

After his Navy service, he worked at Whidbey Electric until 1991. He and Ruth served an LDS mission to Tallahassee, Fla. from 1991 to 1993. They served in the Seattle. LDS Temple for 16 years. Vernie served in the LDS Church as a Bishop and as Patriarch for 24 years.

Vernie was preceded in death by his son Jon Bruce Deardeuff in 1979, his wife Maxine in 1987, and a grandson Enoch Deardeuff in 2006. He is survived by one brother, Bill (Kathy) Deardeuff of Crocker, Mo., and two sons and four daughters: David (LeAnne) Deardeuff, Susan (Kevin) Jones, Joan (Howard) Collett, Tim Deardeuff, Carol (Mark) Holliday and Pam Deardeuff. He is the grandfather of 42 grandchildren and 86 great-grandchildren. Together with Ruth, they had 68 grandchildren and 153 great-grandchildren.

Vernie was a man of unwavering faith, humility, integrity and obedience. His example will light our way for all eternity. He loved his family and the Lord.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 201 NE O’Leary St in Oak Harbor. A viewing will precede the funeral at 9 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Leaf Cemetery.
