Mildred “Millie” Oakes White, age 92, of Oak Harbor, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at Summer Hill Assisted Living.
Mrs. White was born in Oxford, N.C., to John Herman Oakes and Kate (Floyd) Oakes. After she graduated from high school, she attended nursing school and received a certificate in nursing. She was employed at various times as a nurse in New York City, at Maria Purham Hospital in Henderson, N.C., and in Corpus Christi, Texas. On May 31, 1947, she married Edward John White in New York City. Her husband was in the Navy, and the family moved accordingly. They came to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island several times: in the early 1950s and again in 1963 for their final move.
Millie was an avid golfer and a member of the Ladies Club at Gallery Golf Course. She was also an ardent reader.
Millie is survived by her son John S. White and daughter-in-law Carol of Oak Harbor; her sister Anne Jenkins of Raleigh, N.C.; four step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Also by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; by five siblings: J.T. Oakes, Mary Delia Hunt, Lynwood Oakes, Elizabeth Connelly and Franklin Oakes.
In keeping with her wishes, no services will be held. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, where she will be placed next to her husband.
