John Robert Wunsch: May 7, 1928-Oct. 23, 2016

John Robert Wunsch, 88, of Bothell, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016. He was born in Denver, Colo., to Leo and Marguerite Wunsch on May 7, 1928.

John married Betty Leuffgen on June 21, 1952. She preceded him in death on March 26, 2009. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

John spent two years in the United States Army and then enlisted in the United States Navy. He was a Navy pilot who was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He most notably flew the A-6 with multiple aircraft carrier tours.

He retired as a commander after serving 28 years and traveling all over the world. After retiring, John raised polled Hereford cattle and had a small dairy on his farm in Coupeville on Whidbey Island. John and Betty moved to Sun City West, Ariz., in 1988. John was the sound board operator at their church for many years before moving back to Washington in 2011. John enjoyed music and golfing.

He is survived by his daughter Sharon Werner; five grandchildren, Tracey, Kirsten, Devin, Jonathan and Josh; and seven great-grandchildren Nathaniel, Isaac, Madeline, Michaela, Emily, Jacob and Will. He is also survived by family Cynthia Crawford and Lisa Musco and her husband Robert and their two children, Tom and Alyssa, in Connecticut. John was preceded in death by his daughter Sandra Smith on April 15, 2013.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, at Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville. The family welcomes everyone to a reception following the service from 12-3 p.m. at Whidbey Presbyterian Church, 1448 SE 8th Ave, Oak Harbor.
