Janice Audrey Aasland: Dec. 6, 1937 – July 18, 2017

Janice Audrey Aasland (Poehler), 79, resident of Oak Harbor, passed away on July 18, at Fidalgo Skilled Nursing Facility in Anacortes with family by her side.

Janice was born Dec. 6, 1937, in Warwick, N.J., to the late Arthur and Harriet Poehler. She was raised in Maywood, N.J., with her brother Artie and sister Shirley. She attended school in Maywood and later graduated from Paterson General Hospital School of Nursing in 1958.

Janice was united in marriage to Maurice A. Aasland May 29, 1960, in her hometown of Maywood, after which they moved several times with the U.S. Navy, finally settling in Oak Harbor in 1968 to raise their family. Janice worked as an RN for Whidbey General Hospital, then for Whidbey Island Manor before retiring.

She enjoyed knitting especially for her family and working on the family’s genealogy. She was part of the Whidbey Genealogical Searchers, member of the Sons of Norway – Whidbey Island Chapter and the Paterson General Hospital Nurses Alumni group.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Harriet, sister Shirley and granddaughter Megan.

She is survived by her husband Maurice of 57 years, daughter Joyce Aasland of Seattle, son Mark Aasland and wife Judy of Happy Valley, Ore., son Arthur Aasland and wife Sharon of Lakeville, Minn., and daughter Karen Passmore (Aasland) of Mount Vernon, Wash.; by three grandsons, Brandon, Daniel and Zachary; and by three granddaughters, Sarah, Breanna and Carolyn.

Private services will be held at a later date.
