Gena. J. Miranda

Mrs. Richard H. (Gena) Miranda a 22-year resident of Oak Harbor, died early Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002. Her husband of 22 years died Oct. 18, 2001.

Mrs. Miranda was born June 8, 1915, in Wilson Creek to Italian immigrants, Orazio and Maria Rafanelli. Her early schooling was in a one-room schoolhouse in Wilson Creek, and she graduated from Cleveland High in Seattle. She married Vernon O. Hatfield, a Navy pilot, whose career took them far and wide before settling in Everett where they raised four children. An excellent seamstress and cook, Mrs. Miranda delighted in creating unique items for her family and friends. Upon Cmdr. Hatfield’s retirement, they moved to Warm Beach. Gena later opened a beauty salon in Everett and enjoyed many years as a hair stylist. In March 1979, she married Richard Miranda and they had 22 wonderful years traveling, fishing, and spending winters in Martinez Lake and Yuma, Ariz.

Mrs. Miranda is survived by two daughters; Dianne Lund at the family home in Oak Harbor; Elizabeth Genevieve (Leon) of San Francisco; two step-sons, Charles (Debbie) of Terre Haute, Ind., Glenn (Susie) of Crown Point, Ind., as well as two brothers, Russell and George Rafanelli of Seattle. She was known as Nona to her six grandchildren: Pam (Don) of Marysville, Patricia of Renton, Pene of Stanwood, Scott (Joyce) of Hawaii; Mike and Dan of Topanga and Humboldt County, Calif. respectively; and three great-grand-children. She was preceded in death by her two sons, Ben and Hank Hatfield; and a sister, Florence G. Douglass, of San Francisco.

Cremation was held with interment at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Oak Harbor. A combined memorial service will be held with Navy honors. Arrangements by Burley Funeral Chapel.
